Tails 7.8 Anonymous Linux OS Patches Recent Kernel Flaws, Removes Thunderbird

Tails 7.8 has been released as the latest version of this Debian-based distribution designed to protect you against surveillance and censorship by leveraging the Tor anonymous network.

Coming almost a month after Tails 7.7, the Tails 7.8 release is a small update but an important one, as it ships with an updated Debian kernel patched against recent security vulnerabilities that could allow an application in Tails to gain administrative privileges, such as Copy Fail, Dirty Frag, or Fragnesia.

According to the Tails devs, these vulnerabilities could be used by an attacker to exploit other, unknown security vulnerabilities in an application included in Tails, thereby taking full control of your system and deanonymizing you. Tails 7.8 also ships with the latest Tor Browser 15.0.14 web browser.

Another interesting change in the Tails 7.8 release is that the Mozilla Thunderbird email client has been removed from the live session. Of course, Thunderbird can still be installed from the Additional Software tool. The decision to no longer ship Thunderbird pre-installed was taken because the version of Thunderbird in Tails was almost always outdated.

“If you have both the Thunderbird Email Client and Additional Software features of the Persistent Storage turned on, Tails automatically adds Thunderbird to your list of additional software,” said the devs. “By installing Thunderbird as additional software, the latest version of Thunderbird is installed automatically from your Persistent Storage each time you start Tails.”

Tails 7.8 is the eighth maintenance release in the Tails 7.x series, which is based on the Debian 13 “Trixie” operating system series, it’s powered by the long-term supported Linux 6.12 LTS kernel series, and features the GNOME 48 desktop environment by default.

Check out the release announcement page for more details about the changes included in Tails 7.8, which you can download right now from the official website as ISO and USB images for 64-bit systems. Automatic upgrades are available from Tails 7.0 and later, but you can also perform a manual upgrade.

Once again, I remind you that, starting with the Tails 7.x series, Tails now requires 3 GB of RAM instead of 2 GB for a smooth experience. The system will display a notification if the RAM requirements are not met.
